About the award
The award is run jointly by the International Writers’ and Translators’ House and the Writers’ Union of Latvia, together with the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia.
Each year a jury of seven — writers, literary scholars and critics — reads the works submitted and, in March or April, nominates the best of the previous year in poetry, prose, literature for children, translation and debut. A special award for an outstanding contribution to literature and a lifetime achievement award are given as well.
The nominees are chosen in the jury’s discussions; the laureate in each category is decided by secret ballot and revealed at the award ceremony in the second half of April.
The nominated authors and their books are promoted through reviews, interviews, radio programmes and public readings, and recommended for translation and publication abroad.
